Q: Tell us a little about your background and why you decided to become a founder.
A: My background is in consulting and investing in workflow software solutions, and I love seeing human-driven processes improved through software. Seeing my relatives struggle with permitting where I grew up just outside of DC gave me a deep understanding of the industry’s challenges. Seeing the inefficiencies in the permitting process firsthand made me determined to create a solution that could truly make a difference.
Q: What sparked the inspiration for this company?
A: The inspiration for PermitFlow hit me while watching project after project get bogged down by the slow, cumbersome, and often paper-based permit processes. Both my co-founder, Sam, and I have experienced the pain of construction permitting directly, and we knew there had to be a better way. We were driven by the vision of a digital solution that could cut through the red tape and bring real efficiency to the industry.
Q: What challenges did you face in starting PermitFlow? Why has this never been done before?
A: Starting PermitFlow wasn’t easy. The biggest hurdles were navigating the complex regulatory environment and convincing people to switch from traditional methods to a new, digital approach. The construction permitting process is complex and critical for our customers, so the bar to perform is high. But Sam and I were committed to overcoming these barriers to bring a much-needed solution to the industry.
Q: In what specific ways will your technology help to improve the construction industry?
A: Our technology is designed to cut down the time and costs associated with obtaining permits, streamline communication between all stakeholders, and provide real-time tracking and updates. One of our biggest goals is to make housing more affordable by shortening the time it takes to get permits. Faster, more reliable permitting means lower return profiles for construction projects, reduced direct costs from better materials management and subcontractor oversight, and ultimately, more manageable costs for home builders. So far, PermitFlow has helped permit over 5,000 units of housing.
Q: What advice would you give to other founders looking to build in a similar space?
A: To anyone looking to dive into this space, my advice would be to deeply understand the pain-points you want to solve, build a strong network of industry advisors, and take a customer-first approach to simplify decision making.
