Founder Spotlight: AstroForge’s Matt Gialich and Jose Acain

This month, we’re sitting down with AstroForge cofounders Matt Gialich and Jose Acain. AstroForge mines asteroids to extract valuable minerals in space.
Here is a slightly edited version of the conversation:
Q: In one sentence, describe the work you are doing at AstroForge.
A: At AstroForge, we are focused on removing one of the most destructive processes from Earth—mining—while enabling access to space resources for the benefit of humanity.
Q: Tell us a little about your background and why you decided to become a founder.
A: Both of us come from backgrounds where innovation and exploration are key. Matt didn’t choose to become a founder initially, but did so out of necessity to pursue space exploration. Jose, with his experience in robotics and spacecraft, joined not just to start a company, but to be part of a mission that expands and improves our way of life through deep space endeavors.
Q: What sparked the inspiration for this company?
A: Our inspiration came from a desire to think bigger about what’s possible in space, moving beyond just orbiting Earth to solving real problems like mining. We saw an opportunity to push the boundaries of what’s achievable in space and address significant issues back on Earth.
Q: What challenges did you face in starting AstroForge? Why has this never been done before?
A: The main challenges have been the technical and economic hurdles. Mining asteroids is a complex task previously in the realm of government agencies, but we aim to bring it into the commercial sphere thanks to significantly reduced launch costs. We’ve also faced challenges in shifting perceptions from sci-fi fantasies to creating a realistic roadmap using today’s technology.
Q: In what specific ways will your technology help to improve the future of your industry?
A: Our technology aims to dramatically reduce the cost and environmental impact of mining by tapping into space resources, potentially starting a second industrial revolution. By unlocking high-grade materials necessary for clean energy and new technologies, we can provide a sustainable solution to resource scarcity.
Q: What advice would you give to other founders looking to build in a similar space? Things you wish you could tell your younger self?
A: Entering this field requires a readiness to tackle high-risk challenges without much guidance. Matt advises caution, emphasizing that one should be fully prepared, while Jose encourages taking the leap and embracing the attempt despite the daunting challenges.
Q: What’s the most exciting project you are working on right on?
A: We are excited about our upcoming launch to deep space, which marks a significant step forward in our mission and showcases our advancements in space mining technology.
