This month, we’re sitting down with Beyond Aero CEO Eloa Guillotin. Beyond Aero is building an electric private jet powered by hydrogen. The company recently validated their prototype with a successful flight test, joining the exclusive circle of aircraft manufacturers who have launched an electric aircraft into the sky. Check out this video to see the groundbreaking flight.

Here is a slightly edited version of the conversation:

Q: Can you share a bit about your background and why you decided to become a founder?
A: I have a background in aerospace engineering from ISAE-SUPAERO, a university in Europe, supplemented by dual master’s degrees in entrepreneurship (X-HEC). My studies concluded at Berkeley, where I started the company. My passion for aviation and a lifelong habit of building and selling things have led me here. Together with my cofounders Hugo Tarle and Valentin Chomel, we aim to unite the world’s best engineers to build unprecedented prototypes, realizing our vision of a future where dreams become tangible societal advancements.

Q. What inspired you to start this company?
A: Our company was inspired by deep discussions about our definition of success in life and how to transform personal frustrations and needs into a successful company. Our vision for the company emerged from aligning our passion for aviation with the market need and the urgent need for decarbonization, believing that aviation will inevitably become electric.

Q. What challenges have you faced in starting Beyond Aero and why is this venture unique?
A: Fundraising, like for many startups, was a challenge, but we thrived by surrounding ourselves with strong players, including investors, advisors, and partners. Building and maintaining our culture as we grow presents a daily challenge. The urgency for electric flight and decarbonizing air travel, especially with small aircraft, along with the maturity of hydrogen technology, has positioned us uniquely in the industry at a critical time for a significant paradigm shift.

Q. How will your technology improve the future of aviation?
A: Our aircraft is designed around a hydrogen powertrain, making it uniquely suited for hydrogen tanks and cooling systems, enabling it to reach 1,000 miles. This isn’t a retrofit but a new, clean-sheet design, marking a significant advancement in aviation technology.

Q. What advice would you offer to other founders in similar spaces?
A: Dare to think big and go big! The mantra “go big or go home” reflects our philosophy. Founders should not limit themselves to short-term thinking but plan several years ahead, trusting their intuition to connect with the right people, thus attracting positive outcomes.
